Miniature dolls house portrait of a doll

A tiny portrait of a redhaired doll with stripy top, size 6.5 x 6.5cm (2.5 x 2.5in) square. Painted in acrylics on canvas, then adhered onto sturdy mount board with a loop to hang. Finished with a lush layer of gloss varnish for added protection.
Display in your dolls house as it is, or would also look good in a small frame and displayed with a collection of other miniatures.
I bought this beautiful pink dolls house for a baby who is much too young to play with it yet. My husband is convinced I bought it for myself. Well really .... who could possibly believe that!!!!!!? (clears throat and walks off muttering.......)
It's in one of my shops at the moment.

Had fun with this doll having a bad-hair-day.

ACEO Hats

Well into the new year now and deep in winter weather here in middle England.  The studio is too cold and I'm moving to the warmer kitchen table to work, which means I need to work smaller than usual.  Coincides nicely because I've just become fascinated with ACEOs again.  Not something I've done for many years.

What is an ACEO?  The term is an acronym for Art Cards Edition or Original and they measure 2.5 x 3.5 inches (65 x 90 mm) They are wonderful because they are a means of collecting original works of art at an affordable price. A gorgeous burst of colour to cheer the dull days which won't burst the bank.

Dull day, doesn't quite cover it here just now.  Rain one day, high winds the next.  Today it's freezing!  No snow yet, but just a matter of time I think. Warm hats weather.  The summer sun-hat is in cold store for a while, but I can look forward to warmer days by painting it.  Click here for more information about my little ACEO collection.

Memorial Pet Portrait

A lovely lady internet art client, who commissioned a couple of portraits some time ago and has since become a friend, made a request which set me in a quandry.

Her little dog, Jake, a faithful companion for many years, came to the end of his life and she misses him so much.  She wanted his portrait painted.  And here's my problem.  The photo image she wants to remember him with is not great;  as you can see, very little of Jake can be seen in the middle of lots of ivy leaves.

To be honest, under normal circumstances I would have been tempted not to accept the commission in this form.  But I know how much it means to this lady, so I explained the problems to her and my reservations,  and agreed to give it a try.

 ACEO 3.5 x 2.5"
Acrylic on mount board

I couldn't see any detail of Jake from the photo so had to work intuitively with a bit of additional visual information from the client.  I'm so glad now that I didn't give up on this.

Portrait of Carlotta Valdes ACEO

I'm completing outstanding portrait commissions and was reminded that I hadn't shown the final version of Carlotta, so here she is.  If you'd like to see 'work in progress' images of this small ACEO size portrait you're welcome to take a look HERE.

I've now been asked to paint a large portrait of Carlotta Valdes on canvas.  The client has very kindly sent me a DVD of the Vertigo film, which I've been studying. The portrait featured in the film is extremely haunting and I have to say I'm becoming a fan of the the piece in general.  Alfred Hitchcock must have been both a genius and a complicated man.

OLIVE TREE painting

 SOLD

We had a beautiful spring day here yesterday; the grasses and wild plants on the mountain are still lush from the winter rains, and the sun isn't hot enough to have frazzled them yet.

The breeze was too strong for a full scale outdoor painting session, but I managed to capture this little impression of an old olive tree.  It's oil on canvas, ACEO size 2.5 x 3.5 inches.

A Small Addiction

I'm in danger of getting hooked on making these tiny paintings. They are so much fun to do and some are giving me ideas for larger canvases.
The texture on them is crunchy, thick and many layered. I love the almost sculptural effect of the moulding paste.

What is an ACEO?

An ACEO is a miniature piece of art, the same size as a playing card, 2.5 x 3.5 ins (65 x 90 mm). The acronym stands for Art Card Edition or Original. They can be a reproduction of an original piece of art, or the original art itself, and can be made using any medium the artist chooses; paint, fabric, embroidery, paper, canvas, etc etc. The only stipulation is the size.

ACEO's are wonderful because they are a means of collecting original works of art at an affordable price; a gorgeous burst of colour to cheer any dull day, which won't burst the bank. They can be displayed singly in a frame, grouped in 2's or 3's, or why not make a collection and stick them onto a canvas to create your own original abstract grid painting.

I only offer original works of art (no prints/reproductions), small and large. Here are a group of my latest ACEO's, which are full of crunchy texture and colour.

This winter seems to be lasting longer than usual here in Cyprus. Torrential rain and coptic gale here today. My head tells me that Spring is not far away, but needed to convince myself hence today's spring flower painting.

GIRL WITH GREEN BANDANNA figurative expressionist painting

GIRL WITH GREEN BANDANNA
SOLD
Acrylic on thick mount board
2.5 x 3.5 inches
(65 x 90 mm)
She's such a Hussy! But she's wearing red and green so I love her.

The temperatures and humidity are still uncomfortably high. This morning I was a good girl and did some ironing ... aghh... in this heat! So I earned myself some time in the studio. It's a long time since I painted an art card (ACEO) and seemed a good idea as I didn't have enough energy for anything larger.

Don't you just love it when ....

.... someone appreciates your work and takes extra trouble to tell you so :)

I received a lovely email this morning from a gentleman in England, who recently bought one of my original art cards (ACEO). He attached this image showing it framed with others in his growing collection.
ACEO stands for Art Cards Editions and Originals. They are tiny pieces of art in any style or medium, but always size 2 1/2 ins x 3 1/2 ins. They are highly collectable and often traded or sold by collectors. It's the perfect way to own original art at an affordable price.

Dolls' House 1/12 Scale Miniature Portrait

One of two commissions from a dolls' house enthusiast. Size 40mm x 50mm
Still a work in progress I think. Trying to decide how much detail to add to the hair.

Ooops!

These tiny 1/12 scale miniature dolls' house portraits are on hold whilst I go to town and get fixed up with new specs.

The blog has been a bit short on personal stuff recently. Don't believe in spreading misery if I can help it. But this week I'm feeling more positive, my back pain is easier to cope with. Last Friday I drove my car... first time in ages. I really was becoming stir crazy. To celebrate I'm off to town on Thursday to meet Carole for an art mooch and lunch. YAY!
